City of – London

The City of London, often called the “Square Mile,” is the historic core and primary financial district of the capital, functioning as a separate ceremonial county with its own Lord Mayor and police force.  It features a striking contrast in architecture, where ancient landmarks like St Paul’s Cathedral and the Guildhall stand alongside ultra-modern skyscrapers such as the Gherkin, the Cheesegrater, and 22 Bishopsgate.

As one of the world’s leading financial centres, it houses the Bank of England and the London Stock Exchange, supporting global trade from a network of medieval streets that trace back to the original Roman settlement of Londinium.  Beyond its financial importance, the City boasts unique cultural sites like the Barbican Centre’s brutalist complex, the historic Leadenhall Market, and the Museum of London, all packed into a densely historic area that transforms from a busy business hub by day to an atmospheric, quieter district by night.
