Essex

Essex is a diverse ceremonial county in the East of England, known for having one of the longest coastlines in the country, stretching about 350 miles and featuring an intricate network of deep estuaries, salt marshes, and more than 30 islands. It is home to Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town and its first Roman capital, as well as the world’s longest pleasure pier in Southend-on-Sea, which extends 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary.

Historically, the county was the site of the Kingdom of the East Saxons and the starting point of the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt in Brentwood.  Economically, Essex contributes significantly to the UK economy, with a GVA of around £44.8 billion, driven by key sectors such as advanced manufacturing, the Port of Tilbury, and its pioneering role as the location of the world’s first radio factory in Chelmsford.

Despite its reputation as an urban county, much of the county remains rural, featuring scenic landscapes like Dedham Vale—immortalised by the painter John Constable—and ancient woodlands like Epping Forest.
